Q: Do I need to hire an attorney if I’ve been injured in a car crash?

A: That depends.  Many people have small “fender-benders” and walk away injury free.  Likewise, some people are injured and the injury resolves itself within just a few weeks with little or no medical intervention.  However, there are also people involved in what appears to be a small “fender-bender” who suffer traumatic brain injuries, or other life-changing injuries.  There is no guarantee that just because a person is in a certain kind of vehicle, or because the vehicle that hit that person was going under a certain speed, that a victim will walk away from a crash injury free.  It depends on many factors and varies greatly.  As a rule of thumb, if you were involved in a small “fender-bender” and had only minor, fleeting pain or injuries, it is possible that you should try to initially handle the claim yourself.

The best answer where your injuries are more serious, or where your bills are starting to add up, is to seek the informed opinion of an attorney who has a lot of experience in the personal injury field.  There are many instances when we will tell people that they are better off handling their own claim for one reason or another.  We do not charge for that service, and that will at least give you a good idea as to what you may need to do to best resolve your claim. 
 
On the flip side, for major injuries, the complexity of modern day litigation, medicine, and the unwillingness of insurance companies to pay a fair price for the sometimes horrible and life-changing injuries that people suffer at the hands of negligent drivers makes it absolutely essential that you hire a lawyer.  Simply put, chances are very small that you will get a reasonable and fair resolution from an insurance company without hiring a lawyer the more disastrous your injury.  The insurance companies will always have a lawyer, why wouldn’t you?
