These numbers support the point that driving anywhere for even a short length of time can be a risky business. Thanks to the amazing number of safety advances made in automobiles, the number of fatalities is comparatively low. Improvements in seatbelts, airbags, on-board cameras, and automatic notification of emergency services through Global Positioning Satellite based services like On-Star have made accidents that were almost certainly fatal ten years ago survivable today.
